[edit] Jake's 1.5lb vegan white loaf (via Liam):

  1. 400ml water goes in the bucket
  2. Dump 4c. of bread machine flour (no, seriously) on top of the water. Do not mix, let it just sit on top.
  3. Scoop out a small indentation on the top of the mound of flour that forms.
  4. Put 2t. of sugar in one corner of the bucket.
  5. Put 2t. of salt in another corner of the bucket.
  6. Put 1.5t. of bread machine yeast in the little indentation you made.
  7. Press go.

Thus, the yeast is as far from the water and salt and sugar as possible, and the salt and sugar is not directly mixed into the water.
