[edit] Things to Know About

If you have helped with the Big Experiment at Origins, you will notice that there is no "lab space" at GenCon, we normally have our events in the middle of the general gaming area. Therefore, we have to be flexible in how we present our games. It is also important to be at the assigned area no later than 15 before your assigned time.

[edit] Lab Coats

  • If you want to dress like a Rabbit at GenCon, you can wear your lab coat around the convention all weekend long. Hopefully if you want to borrow a lab coat for the weekend, we should have a couple of lab coats to borrow.
  • You may wear your own coat or borrow a coat.

[edit] Other Rabbits Are Your Friends

Many of the Rabbits who help out in the lab have been doing so for years, and even though we only see each other for five days out of the year, we have become fairly close friends. New Rabbits sometimes hesitate to ask questions or join conversations, fearing that they will be viewed as outsiders. The truth is, as soon as you put on that lab coat, you are no longer an outsider and we want to be friends with you! Societal rules about joining and participating in conversations still apply, and keep in mind that your new Rabbit friends might be very different from your friends at home, but please let everybody get to know you.

[edit] The Convention Center Has Its Own Weather

When packing your suitcase for GenCon, you're probably thinking, "Midwest in August! All I need are T-shirts and shorts!" This would be true, except the Indianapolis Convention Center (ICC) has massive ventilators and air conditioners that work to regulate the internal climate of the building. These systems are capable of compensating for the heat and moisture generated by GenCon's estimated fourteen thousand attendees in addition to the heat absorbed by thousands of square feet of roof. This would work great if the systems could be turned on and shut down with lightning precision, unfortunately they cannot be. Learning the ICC weather patterns and how to dress for them is vital for your enjoyment of GenCon.

The 500 Hall and other areas of the ICC can be quite warm while the system is off. Typically, the cooling cycle is not fully switched on while the exhibit hall is closed. Wednesday is warm and stuffy, and this continues until 10am Thursday. The cooling cycle works well, as noted above, and the temperature is comfortable for most of the day until dinner time. At dinner time, thousands of people leave the ICC for hotel rooms and restaurants. However, the cooling cycle is still going full blast! The temperature drops quickly into refrigerator territory, and if you're still inside you may become very uncomfortable. Complicating the matter is that regardless of the indoor temperature, the outdoor temperature may be sweaty hot, wet and chilly, or whatever.

If you're the kind person who gets warm easily, keep in mind that a lab coat adds another (thin, but noticeable) layer. Prepare for the warm times by wearing thin or short clothing. If you're the kind of person who gets cold easily, prepare for the cool times by keeping a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt nearby. Remember to pack these things!

[edit] Plans for the Future

As of right now, we are running events in the afternoon as a series of "happy hours." There's a few ideas that we could pursue for GenCon 2010 and/or GenCon 2011.

  • Add events in the morning and make GenCon similar to the Big Experiment of Origins. The themes could be:
    • Tiki Lounge (fits in with the "happy hour" event themes)
    • Martian Olympics (fits in with the introduction of Martian Fluxx & the Winter Olympics)
    • Anything else?
  • Share a room with:
    • Steve Jackson Games
    • Rogue Judges
    • Anybody else??

[edit] 2010 Email from Shane

Hello all,

The reason that you are receiving this email is because you expressed some interest in helping with GenCon. That's awesome. The purpose of sending this email is fiverfold. First, I can delete all of the emails because I responding back to you. So, *check*...

Second, we can start planning the events. A review of last year's events can be found here (http://rabbits.continuation.org/wiki/GenCon_2009_Final_Report) and here (http://rabbits.continuation.org/wiki/GenCon_%2709_Event_List). I've set up a page on the wiki for this year's events (http://rabbits.continuation.org/wiki/GenCon_%2710_Event_List). If you can work any of those spots, let me know. I have to send it a list of events we're going to run and a list of personal that will be coming by March 10th. Therefore if you want a free badge, you MUST let me know which 12 hours of events you will be willing to run. Also, it give me a good idea on what resources I might need to request. If we run the events listed with the same amount of attendance, we will have 10 badges.

Third of all, I think it would be REALLY COOL if we could complete in some team events at GenCon. For example, NASCRAG I hear is awesome. If there are any events that we can rock the Lab Coat pride, let me know.

Fourth, I would like work on getting a suite or something like that that could act as our housing/base of operations. If there is interest, I could find out the cost.

Five, after GenCon I'm going to off the radar for a while. I'll be unable to come to GenCon or Origins in 2011. More likely I won't be on Facebook, Twitter or email for a while. Hopefully, I'll be able to explain later. With this in mind, somebody will need to be event coordinator for GenCon 2011. If there isn't and the Looney aren't coming to GenCon, well that's that I guess. So, I'll be sending out these shout outs every once and awhile from now until GC. So, catch ya later.

[edit] Don't forget the 5-2-1 Rule!

Every day at GenCon you should, at a minimum, get:

5 hours of sleep,
2 good meals, and
1 shower per day!
