[edit] How to run an Early American / Chrononauts Tournament

Here are some ideas for ways to run an EAC / Chrononauts Tournament:

[edit] Standalone Style (New and improved for Origins since 2008)

  • Seat players randomly in groups of 3-5.
  • Set a timer for each game for an agreeable length of time. Generally a 2-hour block is set aside for this tournament, therefore there are generally 2 forty-minute preliminary rounds prior to the final round. To move a game forward that is nearing the time limit, use the Uber rule of "Draw 2, discard 1, play 1" to stay within the forty-minute limit per round.
  • Rounds may move faster depending on the players, and there can be as many as 3 preliminary rounds within the tournament. Exceeding 3 prelims can create too large a final table, so don't do it.
  • For each round, place one victory token in the middle of the table. The token is awarded to the winner of that round.
  • Rotate the winner of each round to the next table.
  • When time remains only for one final round, the 3-6 players with the most Victory Tokens play a winner-take-all finals round.
  • If time is running short on the final round, again use the Uber rule of "Draw 2, discard 1, play 1" to stay within the forty-minute limit per round.
  • If possible, serve Gummy Dinosaurs representing Terri, Terry, Steggy, Emily and Rex for Original Chrononauts.

[edit] How to run an ÜberChrononauts Tournament

Here are some ideas for ways to run an ÜberChrononauts Tournament:

[edit] Standalone Style (New and improved for Origins since 2008)

  • Seat players randomly in groups of 3-5.
  • Set a timer for each game for an agreeable length of time. Generally a 3-hour block is set aside for this tournament, therefore there are 2 fifty-minute preliminary rounds of Uber prior to the final round. All games start and end simultaneously (unless someone meets all criteria for a Uber win prior to time begin called-see note below regarding an actual Uber winner).
  • Whenever a player accomplishes one of the three parts of their goal, they are given a Victory Token.
  • When the timer rings, all games still incomplete are stopped. All players retain their Victory Tokens as table seating is rearranged for the next round. Note: re-arrange so that those with the most victory tokens move to another table, their table already now has it in for them!
  • If a game ends in the usual way before the timer rings, the winner gets an extra Victory Token.
  • When time remains only for one final round, the 4 players with the most Victory Tokens play a winner-take-all finals round.
  • If the clock ends the finals round, the winner is the player with the most Victory Tokens. Ties are broken by their semi-final totals.
  • If possible, serve Gummy Dinosaurs representing Terri, Terry, Steggy, Emily and Rex.

[edit] Two-Stage Style (Old School ) No longer used at The Big Experiemnt

  • Run six preliminary tournaments, three for Original Chrononauts, and three for Early American Chrononauts.
  • The winners of those tournaments face off in a final game of ÜberChrononauts.
