[edit] Running a Fluxx Tournament?
You will need the following equipment:
- Fluxx decks (As needed; typically 1 deck for every 3-4 players)
- Victory stones
- Optional: Appropriate expansion packs for each deck (e.g. Castle for Monty Python)
- Optional: A deck of index cards and pens (if doing the Triple-T Tournament)
[edit] Preliminary Tournament Rules
Official games must have at least three players, with no more than five in any one game. As players arrive, have them sit at whichever tournament designated table is currently available (of their choice if more than one is available). During the first round, players who arrive late have to wait until after the first round of play. They will begin the tournament once the first round has finished.
At the beginning of the tournament, have one person at each table raise their hand. The person who raised their hand will be person number 1. Continue numbering clockwise around the table (person to the left of 1 is 2, etc.). This numbering will be used to rotate players during the tournament.
The referee will provide a victory token for each game, which will be placed in the center of each table. As soon as one person wins, that person collects the victory token. A player needs one Victory token to advance to the next level of play.
Play is conducted with a traditional game of Fluxx being played with the addition of the Meta-Rule "Rules Escalation" which raises the Basic Rules (and only the Basic Rules) by one (1) each time the deck is shuffled (i.e. When the card "Trash Day" is played and the deck is shuffled, the Basic Rules are now "Draw 2, Play 2". If the deck runs out again after this shuffled and the discard pile is shuffled to make a new deck, the Basic Rules are now "Draw 3, Play 3", etc.).
After each game, players will rotate tables. Then, have two of these numbers rotate tables (usually either 2 and 4 or 1 and 3) clockwise.
OPTIONAL: You may choose to rotate players before the beginning of the first round. If you do, rotation before the second round should be counter-clockwise, not clockwise.
[edit] Rounds/Levels of the Tournament
The tournament will consist of the following levels of play:
1.) Rounds 1 and 2 (aka the Preliminary Rounds): ALL players will play two rounds. Those who have won Victory Stones may advance to the next round.
2.) Semifinals: Divide the remaining players into tables of 3 to 4. Players must give one Victory Stone to the referee before play at the table may start. Only those players with Victory Stones remaining after this round may advance to the Finals.
NOTE: You may have a player advance to the Semifinals with two Victory Stones. This situation may be handled in one of three ways:
- Have the player sit out until the finals (recommended if there are only two or three Semifinal tables).
- Seat the player as mentioned above, but let them keep one of their remaining Victory stones (recommended if there are three or more remaining tables)
- Take all Victory Stones from the player with two stones (Recommended if there are four or more remaining tables)
3.) Finals: The finalists will play a final 3-to-4-person games of Fluxx. The player who wins wins the tournament.
OPTIONAL: If this is not a Fluxx World Championship Preliminary, you may have Finalist play until one player has collected two Victory Stones. That player wins the tournament.
[edit] The Tournament Finals Rules
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RULES: For the World Championship Final of Fluxx, the four qualifying Finalists will play until one player has won two Victory Stones. That player will be determined the winner and World Champion for that year.
OPTIONAL IRONMAN FINALS RULES: The winners of the preliminary tournament will play in an ironman match. The match begins with a victory stone in the middle of the table. The winner takes the stone and a new stone is placed in the middle of the table. The next game can begin. At the end of the first hour of play, if one player has three more victory stone than any other finalist, he or she is declared the winner. If nobody is declared, the finalists play until one finalist has three more victory stone than any other finalists or until another hour has passed. At the end of two hours, the last game is played out and the one with the most victory stones wins.
