[edit] How to Run a Treehouse Tournament
You will need the following equipment:
Treehouse sets
Victory stones
a deck of index cards and pens (if doing the Triple-T Tournament)
[edit] Tournament Rules
Official games must have at least three players, with no more than five in any one game. Try to divide players up as evenly as possible. The larger the total number of participants, the larger each individual game should be. (example 20 players = 5 games of four players). During the first round, players who arrive late have to wait until after the first round of play. They will begin the tournament once the first round has finished.
At the beginning of the tournament, have one person at each table raise their hand. The person who raised their hand will be person number 1. Continue numbering clockwise around the table (person to the left of 1 is 2, etc.). This numbering will be used to rotate players during the tournament.
The referee will provide a victory token for each game, which will be placed in the center of each table. As soon as one person wins, that person collects the victory token. A player needs two Victory tokens to advance to the next level of play.
After each game, winners will rotate tables clockwise.
Ties - There may not be a tie for winner. Moves which create a tie are illegal.
[edit] Rounds/Levels of the Tournament
The tournament will consist of the following levels of play:
1.) Preliminary Rounds: Three to five games of Treehouse should be played during the preliminary rounds. A victory stone is given to each winner of each game. Two victory stones are required to move on to the next round. Once a player acquires two victory stones, they should cease play until the next round. You may need to adjust players to keep tables in the 3-5 player range.
Semifinals are only needed if there are a large number of participants - if the number of remaining participants (3-5) is small proceed to Final Round.
2.) Semifinals: Divide the remaining players into tables of 3 to 5. Players must give their 2 Victory Stones to the referee before play at the table may start. Depending on the number of players remaining, play 3- 5 games Only those players with Victory Stones remaining after this round may advance to the Finals.
3.) Finals: The finalists will play 3-5 person games of treehouse until a single player as won an agreed upon amount of victory stones. That player is declared the winner of the Treehouse Cup.
[edit] The Tornado Treehouse Preliminary Tournament (Triple-T)
This format should only be used from tournament with 16 or more players.
Official games must have at least three players, with no more than five in any one game.
Each player is given an index card with their name on it and/or the lab number on it. Each table for the tournament is assigned a letter.
There are four ten-minute rounds. The first person in each table to make their tree look like their house scores five points. The second player scores four point, the third player scores three points, fourth scores two. If the table doesn't "play out," the table scores three if there are three players left and 2.5 if there are two.
After each game, each player will write down their score on their notecard and their table letter. Some players will change tables for their next match. During the first round, players who arrive late must wait until there are enough players to begin an official game. They will begin the game once the table has enough players. Once all the tables are done, the first round ends and some of the players are moved to different tables. Then, the second round begins. No players can be added once the second round begins.
At the end of the fourth round, all of the cards are added up. The top four scores make it to the final round. If there's a tie, there will be a playoff for the open spots.
The finalists will play 4-person games of Treehouse until someone wins an agrred upon amount of games. That player wins the tournament.
[edit] The Treehouse Cup
The Treehouse Cup is normally awarded at the end of the Treehouse Tournament that is held during Origins. The 2012 Treehouse Cup will be the sixth time the cup has been awarded. The location of the 2012 is TBD as there will not be a Big Experiment at Origins in 2012.
[edit] Ironman Finals
The normal method of selecting the winner of the Treehouse Cup is playing the normal prelims and (if needed) semi-final games previously listed. The finals are normally done ironman style. The players in the final play for an hour. Once somebody wins a game, they are given a victory stone, the board is reset & play begins again. At the end of the hour, the player who has the most victory stones wins as long as they have two more stones than any other player. If there is no clear winner at the end of an hour, the game ends when a player has two more stones than any other player. That player is declared the winner.
During the 2011 Treehouse Cup, the finalists and GM decided to play a "First to 5 Wins" finals.
