The Game Rules on Rabbits Wiki Gyre

[edit] Navigation Structure

Initial proposal by David Artman.

[edit] Legend

  • = Level 1 Navigation links on Main Page and Nav Panel (P1)
    • = Level 2 Navigation links on a sub-page of Main (P2) to sub-sub-pages (P3)
    1. = "Level 2 section headings" on a sub-page of Main (P2) for actual content
      • = Level 3 Navigation links on a sub-sub-page (P3) to sub-sub-sub-pages (P4; Avoid whenever possible!)
      1. = "Level 3 section headings" on a sub-sub-page (P3) for actual content

"P1" = top-level page (i.e., Main); "P2" = second-level page; "P3" = third-level page; italics = variable

Basically, if it's a dot and bold, it's a link on the parent page; if it's a number and quoted, it's a section heading on the child page; and italics means a variable, which comprises several individual things that fit the variable. Bold italics, thus, means several links that fit the variable.

[edit] Outline

("News" section of Main)

  • news_items
  • News Archives to which old article links are moved over time.

("Events" section of Main)

  • Upcoming Events (see Schedule of Upcoming Events; most of the below is already done)
    1. "Listing an Event" - Instructions and links to ready-to-use table templates (on Talk or actual Templates?)
    • Past Events
    • Table row for each event, as a Category; e.g.Trinoc*coN
      1. "Event Links" - External link(s) for the event site and others
      2. "Planning for YYYY" (single section; moved to Event Report Article page once moot)
      3. "Event Reports" - Internal links to yearly reports, as Article pages; e.g. Trinoc*coN/2007
        1. "rabbit_user_id" - Sections of yearly report which individual Rabbits write
    • Individual Rabbits participating in event
      1. user_pages
  • Past Events, as per Upcoming Events, being just a relocation page for upcoming events that have gone by.
  • Event Reports, reports on events which do not have planning Category pages (i.e. usually one-offs, not annuals)

("Rabbit Resources" section of Main)

  • Rabbit Library
    1. (see Rabbit Library for current advice section)
  • Demo Downloads
    1. (portions of the Rabbit Library moved to here)
    2. "Free-To-Use Graphics"
  • Game Information
    • list_of_games
      1. "Rules and Errata" section with links to IHG or LL/WL.
      2. "Variations" section with links to IHG or LL/WL.
      3. "Demoing Advice" with compiled, authored content

("Rabbits" section of Main)

  • Rabbit Coordinators, with explanation
    1. (table listing of individuals and bailiwicks)
  • Demo Rabbits, with explanation
    1. (table listing of individuals and locations?)
  • Teacher Rabbits, with explanation
    1. (table listing of individuals and locations?)
  • Retailer Rabbits, with explanation
    • list_of_states
      1. "city/area" as a table listing of retailers and contact info
  • Rabbit Admins, with explanation
    1. (table listing of individuals and bailiwicks)

(not in a Main Page section, but on Nav Panel and as a large ? icon somewhere prominent on the Main Page and elsewhere)

  • Help (single link, perhaps iconic to draw eye and save whitespace)
    • How To...
    • Site Help, to learn to create and edit pages on this wiki.
    • User's Guide and MediaWiki FAQ, for information on using the wiki software.
    • Sandbox, for experimenting with the wiki with no worries of breaking anything.
    • Help Desk, for when all else fails.

[edit] Discussion

Every page has an overview or introduction.

Every link has a descriptor or definition.

Planning gets top precedence, then resources and advice, then individual and retailer promotion, and finally help and templates.

Games information is just another resource, with all rules out-linked and with only Rabbity advice here.

To better visualize this, perhaps put together a mock up front page in the sandbox, that way when Kristin looks at it she can see an accurate reflection of what it might look like? -Rick
OK, done. Undo, if no like; but I think it's pretty solid. Furthermore, time would be better spent on actual content behind these links, not how we sort out the links. --David Artman 09:05, 10 September 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Category Usage

Initial proposal by David Artman.

Categories are largely useless to us, as means of sorting information. There is little enough information to sort, and the navigation structure is extensible, should we discover untapped information which becomes suddenly invaluable. Therefore, I propose that we only use Categories to sort Rabbits:

  • Conventions (and other annual events) as Categories
As has been argued elsewhere, it is far easier on the Rabbits if they just have to add a con-Category to their User pages than it is to find every convention page (if done as Articles) and add/remove piece-meal.
Once our badging system is complete (see User:Magus/Sandbox/Userbox Examples and its Talk page) convention badges will automatically tag user with con-Categories, if they merely add them to their User pages.
  • Warren
A group of Rabbits who form a Warren can use Categories to easily tag their own User pages, as with the above con-Categories.
Again, Warren badges (easily copied from a con badge template) could auto-tag users, as with the above con-Categories.
  • "Retailer"
Any registered retailer user can add the Retailer Category to his or her User page, as with above con-Categories.
  • "Rocking Retailer"
Only retailers who carry the full line of products (or some high percentage?) could so-tag themselves.
    Can this even be restricted?
  • Games I Demo/Play
Just a way to collect folks for, say, the Big Experiment planning or just to have cool badges (i.e. these badges might not need to automatically drag in the game-Category... and, then, we'd not even need games-Categories at all, especially since 99% of game-specific info will be within one page or its sub-pages: not much need to aggregate THAT.
  • Rev. Bob suggests: Location(s)
Users tag themselves and thereby sort Rabbits by state or major metropolitan region or U.S. region; and, further, each convention-Category page could be tagged with a location-Category tag (or tags, if "layered") as well, to help sort cons for folks who want to see what's near them.
    • I support this idea as a Standard Practice, in addition to those above. David Artman 09:07, 31 August 2007 (PDT)

Update: I just noticed that a Category is not found when one searches on its base name (e.g. "Origins" or "MACE"). Therefore, to support the use of Categories above, I will add that we'd also want to make a "stub page" for the con (Warren, etc) by making an Article page which is a REDIRECT to the con-Category page. Maybe the base Article page could also have a link to the Special Procedures for this wiki, so folks don't "undo" it and use the page for content? Anyway, we'd want folks to hit on "Origins" right at the top of the found pages list, then click it to get to the REAL Origins page for the current year (redirects are automatic).

I like the idea of having an article page that redirects to the category. I think the redirect itself would be enough to give people the idea that they want to edit the category page. If somebody replaces the redirect with content, the volume of changes is currently low enough that it would be easy enough to revert. Jwolfe 22:36, 31 August 2007 (PDT)
Good point; conceded. I have created redirect article pages for all cons that are con-categories at the moment. I don't have time at the moment to setup every con-category on the Schedule of Upcoming Events, so those Rabbit Coordinators (or another volunteer) need to make con-categories in the model of MACE or Trinoc*coN (or Origins). Hey! And a nice benefit of article page redirects to con pages is that we don't have to type out the whole "[[:Category:____]]" junk... we can just use normal "[[___]]" links and they auto-redirect. Kind of handy, really.... --David Artman 08:59, 4 September 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Linking v Authoring

Initial proposal by David Artman.

Simple: if there's a more original or more authoritative or more frequently maintained source off-site, link to it, don't write about it here. Icehousegame.org (IH game rules), LooneyLabs.com (product info), and Wunderland.com (company news) are sacrosanct: they are final authorities--if not copyright holders!--and will never be copied here (except the Rabbit advice, which will eventually come off of Wunderland or be archived for historical purposes, like SLICK was when it was realized how far far behind IHG.org is had gotten).

Author only things which pertain directly to being a Rabbit or to using this (and only this) wiki. Wikipedia/media have tons of great help advice for generic wikis; we should only write Help articles for specific formatting or layout standards for this site.

[edit] Page Edit Suggestions

  • I propose moving the "How To..." link away from the "Help" section and up to the "Rabbit Resources" section. Reasoning: the "How To..." page is all about "How to do just about anything that a Rabbit can do." That's a resource that Rabbits should be aware of. It is not a "Wiki Help" item, as are the rest of the items in that section. Comments? --Carol 11:07, 12 September 2007 (PDT)
You're right. Be bold! Jwolfe 15:02, 12 September 2007 (PDT)
