In the 90s, I was flipping through the pages of InQuest magazine, when I came across and advertising spread for Fluxx, the one featuring "Got Cookies?". I had already swallowed the hook, but it was years before I'd be reeled in. That day came in 2002, when I was browsing the rack in a tiny CCG/RPG shop in Connecticut. A few boxes of Fluxx caught my eye, and I remembered the ad I had seen years before. I took Fluxx home with me that day, and a week later went back for Chrononauts. I do remember the Martian Chess Set and Paper Icehouse sitting on the shelf too, but I could not fathom the inscrutable purpose of those pyramids. I finally was bitten by the Icehouse bug in 2005, and quickly acquired a full set of ten stashes, drawn in by their charisma and beauty.
Chrononauts (and EAC) have been runaway favorites for me. Firstly, time travel is a genre I've always had a strong fascination with. It's hard for me to have a bad session of Chrono. If Chrono were just about the timeline, or just about the artifacts, it would be dull. But it's that combination of all those things happening at once that really works for me. Chrono is an adventure in a compact box. I never feel that I am without a productive move, and I never feel so far behind that winning seems unreachable. It's chaotic enough to keep things fresh and exciting, and strategic enough that I feel like I'm earning a victory, that I'm accomplishing something. It has a pace that lets me sit back and just enjoy watching the game unfold, yet lets me participate in that unfolding. (I also play Fluxx and Icehouse games, too!)
Not only do I play games, but I've been designing games ever since the 3rd grade. I'd draw up little boardgames in between class lessons, attempting to talk classmates into trying my latest idea. I later tried my hand at card games, and even made my own CCG. When I became a pyramaniac (my coined term for Icehouse fan), it was natural for me to dream up some Icehouse games. My two favorite projects are Conquest of Mars and Patterns in the Frost, both of which are on the IcehouseWiki. Lately I have been active in promoting Icehouse online, through Icehousegames.org, BoardGameGeek.com, and SuperDuperGames.org.
